Maharashtra sugar production up 10%

(The Economic Times): A better availability of labour due to wage hike and an increased use of harvesting machines have helped Maharashtra sugar mills crush more cane in less time this year.

The mills have crushed about 10% more cane till last week as compared to the previous year. Barring a few mills in Pune region, the crushing season is expected to get over in the state by April-end. Despite a late start due to farmer protests over cane price, cane crushing is going on unhindered.

Till last week, Maharashtra mills had crushed 640 lakh tonne cane and produced 734 lakh quintal sugar with a recovery of 11.46% as compared to crushing of 585 lakh tonne cane and sugar production of 651 lakh quintal with a recovery of 11.12% during the same period of last year.

The quantity of cane crushed is higher by 9.40% while the quantity of sugar produced is higher by 12.7%.

Sugar production is higher because sugar recovery this year is higher by 0.32% as compared to the last year.

An increment of 70% in wages ensured that the labour did not migrate to neighbouring states. "We have better labour availability this year," said the managing director of a Baramati-based sugar co-operative.

The increase in the use of harvesters has also eased some pressure. "As compared to 28 harvesters we had last year, 130 harvesters are operating this year," said an official from the state sugar commissionerate. Sugar mills get a 25% subsidy for the harvesters.

Although there is an improvement in recovery, the per-acre cane yield of the sugar cane crop has dropped. As a result, the state sugar commissionerate has revised downward its estimate of sugar production to 88 lakh tonnes to 89 lakh tonnes.

India's oilseed output rose 2.2 percent to 26.01 million tonnes in the current crop year, a leading trade body said on Sunday, with the main winter-sown rapeseed crop hit by adverse weather conditions, and suggesting edible oil imports might rise.

Output of rapeseed dropped by 12.6 percent to 6.03 million tonnes in the year to June 2012, said the Central Organisation for Oil Industry and Trade, which usually gives its estimate for the full year in mid-March after the crop has been harvested.

The forecasts for both oilseed and rapeseed output are below farm ministry expectations but ahead of traders' forecasts for a 25 percent fall in rapeseed output made in February.

Traders then also suggested lower output could mean a rise of about half a million tonnes in imported oils for the year ending October 31.

The farm ministry last month pegged India's total oilseeds output at 30.5 million tonnes in 2011/12, down six percent.

Rapeseed output was pegged at 7.5 million tonnes.

Rapeseed, the main winter-sown oilseed crop, was hit by higher temperatures at the planting and in the final stages as well, traders said.

India, the world's top vegetable oil importer, grows nine oilseeds, with soyabean being the main summer-sown crop.

Rapeseed oil meets 15-17 percent of about 16.5 million tonnes of annual edible oil demand.


Thiruvananthapuram: Buy ready-cut vegetables at cheap price

Ready-cut vegetables for making ‘sambar’ and ‘aviyal’, the traditional cuisine of Malayalees, will soon be available in Thiruvananthapuram city at a cheap price through outlets at Thampanoor KSRTC Bus Stand and Railway Station.

The State Horticultural Products Development Corporation (Horticorp) and the State Horticulture Mission are on a mission to provide organic vegetables for the people of Kerala and this is a pilot project being implemented in the capital city. The vegetables will be procured from the farmers in Thiruvananthapuram district.

State Horticulture Mission Director K Prathapan told Express that a slew of programmes are being planned for Thiruvananthapuram, to be later extended to other cities in the State. Cut vegetables for ‘sambar’ and ‘aviyal’ will be the first attempt where the public can purchase it on the way home after work.

‘’The present plan is to make available the vegetables during evening as there is a heavy rush at bus stations and the railway station at this time. This will be beneficial to those who want the traditional cuisine to be cooked in the evening or the next day,’’ Prathapan said.

It is planned to sell one packet of the vegetable mix at a cost of ` 10. The produce will be procured from the farmers who are cultivating it in the southern parts of the district.

According to Prathapan, the produce will be sold through Self-Help Groups of women. This will provide an income for the women as well as ensure a market for vegetables cultivated without using fertilisers in the district.

The Peri-urban Vegetable Initiative of Union Ministry of Agriculture under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, which was implemented in Thiruvananthapuram district, has shown positive results. Seed kits were distributed to 25,000 households for vegetable garden cultivation through 450 residents’ associations.

‘’The project is aimed at cultivating vegetables in each and every house so that the daily cuisine should have one vegetable cultivated at home. The waste generated from each home can be used as manure for cultivation, resulting in managing waste from its source itself,’’ he said.

As part of expanding the vegetable cultivation, seeds, dried cow dung and vermi-compost will be distributed with the help of a vehicle. It will ensure that it reaches every nook and corner of the district.

Horticorp is also planning to introduce vending machines in the city from where the public can buy vegetable seeds. Seeds weighing five or ten grams will be made available through these machines.

India's rapeseed output seen down

India's rapeseed output is expected to fall 8.5 percent to 6.3 million tonnes in 2012 on lower acreage of the oilseed crop, a trade body survey showed on Monday.

Reuters reported on February 1 that the county could see a drop in the rapeseed crop, meaning that vegetable oil imports by the world's top buyer could rise by about a half a million tonnes in the import year ending October 31.

The drop could primarily be because of a decline in output in Rajasthan, the western Indian state that produces about half of the country's output.

Rajasthan is likely to harvest 2.9 million tonnes in 2012, down 17.1 percent from the last year's output, the survey of the Solvent Extractors' Association of India showed.

The country's rapeseed area dropped by 9.2 percent to 6.5 million hectares, it said, mainly due to unfavourable weather at the beginning of the planting season.
Rapeseed, India's main winter oilseed crop, is planted in October and harvested in February.

"Rapeseed planting was hit by warmer conditions that prevailed at initial phase in October and November," said B.V.

Mehta, executive director of the Mumbai-based trade body.

Soil fertility practices that meet organic certification standards typically include crop rotation, cover cropping, animal manure additions, and use of naturally occurring rock powders. Weed management is accomplished by a combination of cultivation, flame weeding, and other cultural practices. A wide variety of insects attack cotton. Management options include trap cropping, strip cropping, and managing border vegetation to encourage high populations of native beneficials. Certain biopesticides using bacteria, viruses, and fungal insect pathogens are available as insect control tools.

We discuss specific insect management strategies for cutworm, cotton bollworm, tobacco budworm, pink bollworm, armyworm, loopers, thrips, fleahoppers, lygus bugs, aphids, whitefly, spider mite, and boll weevil. Seedling disease, soil disease, and foliar disease management is also discussed. Pre-harvest defoliation methods that meet organic certification are mostly limited to citric acid, flamers and frost. The publication concludes with sections on marketing organic cotton and the economics and profitability of organic cotton production.

rubber price news this week, global agribusiness agriculture - Rubber futures were also inflated this week, as the market took its cues from the local spot market. The spot market was left with little arrivals last week and the onset of monsoons has also been contributing towards tightness in the market.

However, the expectations of higher produce in the coming days might be a solace for the market and might result in prices stepping back in the days to unfold. According to the Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries (ANPRC), the production is estimated to have increased 5.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2011.

The production is also estimated to rise by another 7.2 percent in the second quarter of the year, added ANRPC. Rubber futures for the most active June contract climbed above Rs.230 per Kg briefly during the final trading day of the week, and closed at Rs.227.97 per Kg on Friday, up 6.13 percent as compared to the previous week’s closing.

Tapioca
Tapioca and It's Production - Tapioca is basically a root starch derived from the cassava, or yuca plant. It's often used to thicken soups and sweeten the flavor of baked goods, and it makes a dandy pudding.  The cassava plant is native to South America and the West Indies, where its thick, fibrous roots are used in a variety of forms: bread flour, laundry starch, an alcoholic brew, and of course, tapioca pudding. As the Encyclopedia Britannica tells us, it was probably first harvested by the Mayans.

Tapioca is a starch extracted from the root of the plant species Manihot esculenta. This species, native to the Amazon, Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela as well as the Caribbean, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, most of the West Indies, is now cultivated worldwide and has many names, including cassava, bitter-cassava, manioc, "mandioca", "aipim", "macaxeira", "manioca", "boba", "yuca" (not to be confused with yucca). In India it has different names in different regions such as, "Sagudana" (literally, Sagu drops), "Sabudana"(literally, drops of soap) and "Kappa". In Vietnam, it is called bột năng. In Indonesia, it is called by malay ubi kayu or singkong.In Philippines, it is called sago.

The name tapioca is derived from the word tipi'óka, the name for this starch in Tupi. This Tupi word refers to the process by which the starch is made edible. However, as the word moved out of Brazil it came to refer to similar preparations made with other esculents.

Tapioca is a staple food in some regions and is used worldwide as a thickening agent, mainly in foods. Tapioca is gluten free, and almost completely protein free. 'Tapioca' in Britain often refers to a milk pudding thickened with arrowroot, while in Asia the sap of the Sago palm is often part of its preparation.

The cassava plant has either red or green branches with blue spindles on them. The toxin found in the root of the red-branched variant is less harmful to humans than the green-branched variety. Therefore, while the root of the red/purple-branched variant can be consumed directly, the root of the green-branched variant requires treatment to remove the toxin. Konzo (also called mantakassa) is a paralytic disease associated with several weeks of almost exclusive consumption of insufficiently processed bitter cassava.

Commercially, the starch is processed into several forms: powder, fine or coarse flakes or meal, rectangular sticks, and spherical "pearls". Pearls are the most widely available shape; sizes range from about 1mm to 8mm in diameter, with 2–3mm being the most common.

Flakes, sticks, and pearls must be soaked well before cooking, to rehydrate them; they will easily absorb water equal to twice their volume, becoming leathery and swollen. All these products traditionally are white, but sticks and pearls may be colored. The oldest and most common color is brown, but pastel colors are now available. In all its forms tapioca starch is opaque before cooking; and become translucent when cooked.

Nigeria, Brazil, and Thailand are the world's largest producers of cassava. Thailand accounts for 60% of worldwide exports.

Over 1 billion, or 15% of the world still do not have enough food on a regular basis. At the turn of this century, United Nations expounded eight Millennium Development Goals. On top of the list is the goal to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. The need to address this important issue was echoed, not too long ago, at the World Summit on Food Security that was held in Rome, Italy in November 2009. Very recently, in April 2010, World Bank launched the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP), which is a new multi-donor trust fund to improve food security and incomes in low-income countries through assistance to agriculture.

What is food security? According to FAO, food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.

The oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) is an important agricultural crop, which yields three important sources of food, namely palm oil, palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake. An average of 3.7 tonnes of palm oil, 0.4 tonnes of palm kernel oil and 0.6 tonnes of palm kernel cake is obtainable from one hectare of land. While the first two products can be used for human consumption, such as cooking oil, margarines, shortenings, bakery fats, vanaspati, ice creams and Vitamin E, etc., palm kernel cake is used as an animal feed.

High Land Productivity of Oil Palm is Key to Mitigate Climate Change



The two major palm oil producers in the world are Indonesia and Malaysia, with outputs of 21.1 and 17.6 million tonnes respectively in 2009. Together, they constitute a magnanimous 85.3% of the world’s production.

Palm oil constitutes the major bulk of the world’s production of oils and fats. It contributed to 27.6% share when its production in 2009 was 45.5 million tonnes. Soyabean ranked second with a production of 35.9 million tonnes or 21.8%, animal fats third with 24.4 million tonnes produced or 14.8% while rapeseed was fourth with an output of 21.5 million tonnes or 13.1%.

There are hurdles to overcome during the pursuit to achieve food security in the future. A major obstacle is the diminishing availability of already scarce arable land. While population increases, the lack of arable land may not permit this to happen as it decreases from 0.75 hectares in 1922 to 0.23 hectares in 2005 and this will decrease further to 0.19 hectares per capita in 2030. An urgent need to use this scarce resource wisely can be realized if palm oil is chosen as the preferred oil over the other major vegetable oils. Due to oil palm’s high land productivity, whereby it can produce 4.1 tonnes versus 0.59, 0.42 and 0.36 tonnes of oil per hectare for rapeseed, sunflower and soyabean respectively, 7 times less land area is needed to obtain the same amount of vegetable oil if palm oil substitutes rapeseed completely.

Utilize Minimal Precious Land Resource to Get Same Yield



Similarly, palm oil’s substitution for sunflower and soyabean saves 10 to 11 times more land from being cleared and planted with these two crops. The extra land saved, could then be used to plant other crops or for animal husbandry.

Maximize Use of Land



With land scarcity, palm oil’s contribution to ensure food security comes from successful research carried out in Malaysia, whereby clonal oil palm materials, capable of producing 25 to 50% more fresh fruit bunch yield are already planted in the fields. As such, higher land productivity than that obtained currently, can be expected from oil palm in the future, without resorting to felling more new land.

Vegetable oils such as palm, rapeseed, sunflower and soyabean can be used as biofuels. There is concern that there will be competition between these vegetable oils for use as food or fuel. Chatham House, United Kingdom has optimistically projected that 28% of vegetable oils or 57 million tonnes will be used for biofuels in 2015, with the balance of 72% to be used for food. In 2050, 39% of total vegetable oils will be used as fuel and the balance of 61% will be used for food. Such projected large amounts of vegetable oils dedicated for biofuel usage is unlikely to happen.

Progress has been made to convert biomass to biofuel leading to minimal quantities of vegetable oils being used as biofuels. In this respect, palm oil has a sustainability edge over soya, rapeseed and sunflower, as the oil palm, which is a perennial crop, produces large amounts of biomass all year round and these can be used for biofuel. Palm kernel is already used as a fuel source while palm briquettes can be made from empty fruit bunches. Methane from the palm oil effluent ponds is also trapped and used as biogas. Thus, besides ensuring food security, a new business of converting waste to wealth is created in the palm oil industry.

Palm Biomass Briquettes



Palm oil can enhance food security by ensuring that the competition between food and fuel is minimal when its biomass are utilized for fuel and, therefore, any price hike will not be the result of such competing demands.

One of the drivers that often derail food security is the inability of the rural population, some of which live below the poverty level, to be able to afford sufficient food. The oil palm is a proven economic crop that has been used successfully to eradicate poverty due to its successful cultivation. The FELDA model in Malaysia bears testimony to such a success.

In conclusion, palm oil is the leader among the major vegetable oils that has the greatest potential to overcome food insecurity. It is capable of doing so in a very sustainable way since it requires the least land to produce the same amount of oil, thus freeing diminishing arable land for the cultivation of other crops or for animal husbandry. It is also proven that oil palm cultivation can help to eradicate rural poverty and hunger, which is one of the primary Millennium Development Goals.

Ensuring adequate supply of edible oils for the world market at affordable prices is very important to low income people of the developing world. Derailing future expansion of palm oil production through the Western Environmental NGO anti-palm oil campaigns will impact food security among the developing country population the most. It will also lead to massive deforestation as 10 times more land would be required to plant competing crops such as soyabean to meet future shortages compared to oil palm cultivation.

Brazil – Petrobras aims to be global bio-fuels player

Petrobras aims to be a global player in bio-fuels, in which it plans to invest $3.3 billion between 2009 and 2013, said the Petrobras Biocombustíveis director, AE Brazil- Financial and Corporate News reports. Of that total, 80% will be invested in ethanol.

According to him, Petrobras is getting ready for "a world without oil" and the company aims to be among the top-five global bio-fuel leaders by the end of 2020.

He also said Petrobras has been in talks for a bio-diesel production project in Africa and noted the company has ethanol projects under development in some Latin American countries. "Petrobras' strategy is to be a global player, with a relevant role in the world markets for bio-diesel and ethanol," said the executive. (19 May 2009)

Australia- “1st integrated soybean processing and bio-diesel plant”

The go ahead has been given for a $243 million soybean processing and bio-diesel production facility at Port Kembla, ABC News reports.

New South Wales’ Minister for Lands, said: "This is the first integrated soybean processing and bio-diesel production facility in Australia and is a major boost to the Illawarra. The project is expected to generate $977 million in revenue and in addition to the 235 new permanent full-time jobs, will provide approximately 725 jobs in related industries and a further 500 jobs during construction of the facility. The plant will produce 288 million litres of bio-diesel a year; along with 850,000 tonnes of soy bean meal for poultry and livestock feed”."

In July 2007 the NSW Government implemented legislation to mandate the blending of all diesel fuel blended with 2% bio-diesel, the mandate will increase from two per cent to five per cent in 2011," he added. (19 May 2009)
