Bangladesh delays tender for 50,000 tonnes of wheat

"The new date for the opening of offers will be December 22 instead of December 12 and the offers will remain valid until January 3," the official said.
The tender was issued on November 27, with shipment within 40 days after signing the deal.
Total government rice and wheat stocks stand at more than 1.5 million tonnes, double a year ago and the highest in a decade.
And 200,000 tonnes of imported wheat will add soon to the state inventories, which have a total capacity of 1.6 million tonnes.
The official said an unspecified amount of grains would be released from the stocks for regular welfare programmes.
The state grains buyer so far in the fiscal year that ends in June 2012 has purchased or finalised deals for 350,000 tonnes of wheat against plans to import a total of 900,000 tonnes.
Private traders import around 2.5 million to 3 million tonnes of wheat to meet demand, as domestic production has stagnated at nearly 1 million tonnes.
Wheat consumption is rising in Bangladesh in line with steady economic growth and a changes in lifestyles, although rice remains the staple food for its 160 million people.
