The oil palm is one of the important cash crops of the eastern seaboard of the African continent which has contributed and has the potential to contribute even more to the economic development of the continent.
The prevailing climate of this area, from Angola to Gambia, favours the growth of this crop. Most oil palms grow wild in oil palm groves and have been exploited as such in the past. The increase in demand for palm oil has driven the improvement in the crop and the methods of cultivating the crop and tapping its vast potentials. In order to accomplish this task, the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) was established near Benin City the Edo state capital in Nigeria.
The Institute has since undertaken investigations into different ways o improving production. The results of these investigations and the recommendations made form the basis of these series of articles
