Question/Answer relate to palm oil

Question
Dear sir, I would like to have some information about oil palm tree. I had a question on if the tree is planted for 5 and a half years, how much tonne is the production for 1 acre per year? I am looking forward to hear from you and i appreciated it. Thanks. Sincerely, Donnie Tew
Answer
Dear Mr Twe, The yield from oil palms depends not only on age but also on the variety, quality of seed, soil, climate, rainfall, fertiliser application, management etc. In Malaysia, large well managed plantations get twice the yield small holders get. At 5 1/2 years old, if the above conditions are good, you should be getting 3 1/2 to 4 tonnes per hectare. Regards, FP.

Question
What is the different palm olive and date olive? Second question - how can ı use date oil in cozmetic?
Answer
Dear Mr Serap, In regard to your first question, palm olive and date olive are not recognised international names for oils. Are you sure you have translated the names correctly? In regard to your second question, date oil is also not a recognised name. But if you mean palm oil, yes you can use it in some cosmetics, but not in all of them. It depends on the formula. Regards, FP.

Question
Dear Dr. Pantzaris, we are a potato based snacks manufacturing company. Can we use single fraction RBD Palm Olein for frying? What is the benefit of using single fraction RBD Palm Olein compared to double fraction RBD Palm Olein aside from the cost? Thanks & regards, Tarek Kayali
Answer
Dear Mr Kayali, The main difference between standard (single fractionated) and double fractionated palm olein, is in their melting point, which for the latter is about 6C lower. When oils are sold in clear bottles, DF olein looks better, but in industrial and catering frying most people cannot to tell the difference, and of those who can, some prefer one and some prefer the other. It depends on national preferences. Regards, FP.

Question
Dear Mr. Frank, Thanx for yr kind co-operation always. Now i want to know that, if the material having the specifications as:- FFA 18%, TFM :- 68%, IV 44% rest is unsape material. Is this material is called vegetable oil with unsaponifiable matter. Is this edible oil. Is this non edible oil. can we say this is industrial oil for soap manufacturer. Can we refine this product and get vegetable oil (edible). Your kind reply will be highly appreciated. Regds, Jatin.
Answer
Dear Mr Patania, The 3 test results you give are not enough to prove the material's safety. Only the supplier can assure you that there is nothing harmful in it. The TFM is only 68%, what is the other 32%?. The FFA is also extremely high. I suspect the material is palm stearin tank bottoms. Other things being OK, it can be used for technical purposes (eg soap) and animal feeds. Regards, FP.

Question
Dear Mr. Frank, I am working in Hydrogenated Fat manufacturing industry. For checking mpt. we use slip capillary method as per MPOB. But some time we get Varriations in mpt. Is there any other Authentic method for mpt. measurement or How much deviation is possible (+/-) especially product made from pure Palm Oil hydrogenation Regards, A. Shukla
Answer
Dear Mr Shukla, I am not surprised you have problems with the Slip Melting Point because experience has shown it is the most unsatisfactory test of all. Every body has trouble with it, but unfortunately it is the test always specified. In my opinion, 95% of the results from the same laboratory should agree within 1C and those between different laboratories within 2C. There are instruments that give better and more objective results, but I cannot mention them on a public website. Regards, FP.

Question
Dear Mr. Pantzaris, I understand there are sediments at the bottom of palm oil storage tanks. My question, are there any useful applications for the sediments? Thank you. Regards, Wai Yin
Answer
Dear Mr Yin, You have asked an interesting question. When oils are stored they usually leave some sediment at the bottom of the vessels, and its amount and nature will depend on the type of oil and the processing it has undergone. By far the biggest amount comes from the storage of crude oils and consists mostly of water, emulsified oil and gums. This material has a market value because it can be used in animal feeds (if its smell is not too bad), or for splitting into fatty acids,or as fuel for boilers. It will be easier to sell it if you can first let it settle for a while and run off the worst part of it from the bottom, or centrifuge it, if you want to be technically advanced. Its market value will be proportional to its oil content, but with petroleum at around US$ 60 per barrel, the prospects seem very good to me. Regards, FP.

Question
What is the saturated fat content of super olein? What the price parity between super olein and palm olein?
Answer
Dear Mr Bulent, The saturated fat content of palm olein is about 41%, but varies according to grade, because this is a speciality product, often made to order. Its price is always higher than standard olein but the difference is not fixed. You will have to refer to its sellers. Regards, FP.

Question
Frank - Please define the following terms that were used on the site (http://www.palmoil.com/index.php?q=D1VTW1tASgIEAhEbVg9WBAAOBw==) wherein you talk about RBD Palm Olein (RPOo):
a.. SMP
b.. SFC
c.. I figured out that IV = Iodine Value
I am chiefly interested in cloud point, cloud point additives and (in general) physical properties of Palm Olein and RBD Palm Olein. Anything you can offer will be appreciated. Regards, Rick Kelley
Answer
Dear Rick, The meaning of the abbreviations you mentioned are: IV= Iodine value, SMP= Slip melting point, SFC= Solid fat content. All of them are very important. The cloud point is a misleading value because oils become cloudy at much higher temperatures than that. Regards, FP.

Question
I want to reduce my blood cholesteral level. I understand that unrefined palm oil can help with this, but want to know if refined palm oil does just > as good a job or not. ANy info you have on this, or on any other dietary differences between the refined and unrefined palm oils will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Meg
Answer
Dear Meg, First I have to tell you that if you have concerns about high blood pressure and cholesterol, you should take the advice of your own doctor and not experiment on your self, in a field jam full of biased information. In my opinion the best sources of information are some Western Universities, the American Heart Association, the COMA reports of UK and similar bodies in your own country. At present the consensus of medical opinion is that the best oils for most people, though not for all people, are those richest in oleic acid, such as virgin olive oil and refined rapeseed/canola oil. Regards, FP.

Question
Dear Sir, Thanks for yr kind co-operation. Now, is it possible that the mixed acid oil have the specification as.
FFA 18% to 25%
TFM 85% 98%
M & I 2% to 5%
IV 70% to 80 %
Can we say above is mixed acid oil. Thanx in advance. B Regds, Jyotin
Answer
Dear Mr Patania, The data you present show that this is a very low grade material and in my opinion, an oil with less than 50% FFA should not be called "acid oil", since most of it is neutral oil. My view is supported by the PORAM standard for palm acid oil which stipulates FFA 50% min. Nevertheless, there is no official definition of mixed acid oil, nor any proper survey to show what exactly is being traded under that name. Traders who want certain minimum standards, should specify them in their contracts.
