Satellite surveillance to curb poppy farming in India

What is the common link between the satellites hovering over India turning their gaze towards West Bengal and north east; authorities in Thailand trying to help farmers there to change their crop patterns; general inactivity of parallel armies in Myanmar; opium addiction in Punjab and Maharashtra farmers finding a new way of making it rich by selling ‘khas khas’?

Ask Narcotics Control Bureau’s (NCB) zonal director Yashodhan Wange and pat comes the reply, “Increasing destruction of illicit poppy farms in West Bengal with the help of satellite imageries, Thailand farmers changing their crop patterns, lethargic attitude adopted by the parallel armies in Myanmar and opium addiction in Punjab are all the factors which could have resulted in sudden spree of poppy cultivation in Maharashtra.”

Wange says, “Poppy farming happening at such a large scale in Maharashtra is shocking. The NCB is monitoring the situation closely and we have an action plan to curb this new worrisome trend, while working in association with the local authorities.”

So far, poppy cultivations have been busted in Beed, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Pune districts. Some 300 acres have been found under poppy cultivation in these areas and the narcotics authorities fear that it could just be the proverbial tip of the iceberg.

According to a rough estimate by the narcotics authorities, at least 500 acres in Maharashtra could be under poppy cultivation.

Wange says, “The NCB has taken due cognisance of the new trend and evolved an action plan. Poppy is a rabbi crop. Its sowing is done around October and the season goes on till February or March. From the next season, we will use satellite imageries to detect poppy crops in the state and these crops will be destroyed with the help of local authorities. The infrastructure that is required for satellite surveillance has already been put in place. So, in a few months, destroying of poppy crops in the state would begin at a massive scale.”

The NCB official said, “This cultivation in Maharashtra would not have any visible impact on the sale of opium in the local illicit market like increase in the number of addicts or rise in the numbers of raids by the police on drug peddlers. After monitoring the investigations so far, we feel that the farmers in Maharashtra have been using primitive methods like storing the shells of poppy pods after extracting ‘khas khas’ and selling them to illicit opium producers because of which the per acre yield would reduce to only 30 to 40% of what it can be. Considering the national and international scene, this is a negligible amount.”

According to him, the international and national drug market has been facing acute poppy shortage for the last couple of years. The international market has suffered because of the reduced poppy cultivation in Thailand, a major poppy producer in the Golden Triangle. Over the last decade or so, the Thai government has launched a massive crackdown against poppy cultivation. On the other hand, they have launched special schemes to attract poppy cultivators towards other crops. The other major poppy producer, Myanmar, too is facing supply problems as the parallel armies who used to traffic poppy from there to European countries have adopted lethargic attitude towards smuggling of narcotics. This has resulted in causing shortage of poppy in international market.

Wange said, “The poppy cultivators from Beed say their yield was being purchased by people in Nanded. Being a pilgrim centre, Nanded is frequented by people from Punjab where opium addiction is rampant.”


Japan plans futuristic farm in disaster zone

TOKYO — Japan is planning a futuristic farm where robots do the lifting in an experimental project on land swamped by the March tsunami, the government said Thursday.

Under an agriculture ministry plan, unmanned tractors will work fields where pesticides will have been replaced by LEDs keeping rice, wheat, soybeans, fruit and vegetables safe until robots can put them in boxes.

Carbon dioxide produced by machinery working on the up to 250-hectare (600 acre) site will be channeled back to crops to boost their growth and reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers, the Nikkei newspaper said.

The agricultural ministry will begin on-site research later this year with a plan to spend around four billion yen ($52 million) over the next six years, a ministry official said.

Land in Miyagi prefecture, some 300 kilometres (200 miles) north of Tokyo, which was flooded by seawater on March 11, has been earmarked for the so-called "Dream Project".

The tsunami, sparked by a 9.0-magnitude quake, inundated the country's northeast, killing more than 19,000 people, according to the latest figures.

It also badly polluted the land, leaving it laden with salt and depositing oil on fields, with around 24,000 hectares of once-fertile farmland damaged by the tsunami, earthquake and fallout from the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant.

Meltdowns at reactors at the plant sent radiation into the air, sea and food chain, badly denting public trust in local produce.

The atomic disaster and the ravaging of farmland were the latest blows to a struggling and ageing farm industry that is also facing the threat of renewed competition from abroad as Tokyo eyes a Pacific-wide free trade pact.

High-tech companies such as Panasonic are to be invited to get involved in the project in a bid to give a much-needed boost to the beleaguered sector, the ministry spokesman said.

"We hope the project will help not only support farmers in the disaster-hit regions but also revive the entire nation's agriculture," he said.

Among other companies expected to join the project are Fujitsu, Hitachi, Sharp, NEC, Yanmar, Ajinomoto and Ito-Yokado Co., according to the Nikkei business daily.

The paper said total investment, including funds from the private sector, would be around 10 billion yen.

Management of the land during the six-year project is expected to be entrusted to local farming corporations and production will begin once salt has been removed from the soil, the Nikkei said.

Once the six-year lease period is finished, the government plans to urge local farmers to consolidate their farmland under the farming corporations, the paper added.

Savings for Consumers and Saving the Environment

Saving energy in the future may be possible with washing machines that use less water.

There is a prototype washing machine that uses 90 percent less water than current washers do, which could make sustainability easier in the future. Nylon beads replace the water. The polarized molecules in the nylon beads attract dirt, then separate enough to allow that dirt to become trapped inside, thus requiring less water than standard washers do.

Less water means less energy to purify, heat, and transport it. Plans are underway to use these machines in commercial laundries sometime during next year and someday they may be available for in home use. This would have a great effect on consumer energy bills.

Greenwashing and technology

Has anyone discussed the technology Greenwashing? I found an article discussing the consumer electronics industry and their efforts to put a “green” label on their products in order to increase sales in the trendy “green” markets of today.
After discussing how the industry is putting a false “environmentally friendly” image on many of their new products, the author goes on to say that every consumer electronics product is bad for the environment. They all contain metal and toxic materials, and many have batteries and other acidic, poisonous components. The manufacturing, distribution, usage and disposal -- even recycling -- has some bad impact on the environment. Here's the link:
