Review & Description

HONEYSUCKLE: The genus Lonicera contains more than 200 species worldwide and is distributed in temperate and subtropical regions of North America, Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Most of the species are small trees or shrubs. Honeysuckle is cultivated in private gardens and in cities as an ornamental because of its large, fragrant flowers and brilliant red fruits.

Much admired in Europe, this fine selection of the Late Dutch Honeysuckle impressed us tremendously at the Boskoop Trials in Holland. More compact and slower growing than the species and much earlier blooming, it produces an immense bounty of fragrant flowers from early summer well into frost. The crimson buds open to creamy white, yellow and dark red flowers, followed by translucent red fruit. Probably the most beautiful climber in the genus, it is excellent grown on trees, pergolas or fences, and ideal for screening.

Creeping Thyme (Serpyllum Mother of Thyme) - A perennial creeping thyme for use between paving-stones or as an edging! Mother of Thyme is an ideal choice for planting between walkway stones or bricks and used as a ground cover. Like other thymes, the leaves are highly fragrant; great to inhale as you are walking along the pathway to the front door! This prostrate, mat-forming perennial with slim stems is lined with tiny, oval, hairy leaves which tend to be dark green. Clusters of pale lavender flowers appear in summer on plants that reach 2 - 4 inches tall and 24 inches wide. Grow like other creeping thymes, in well-drained soil in full sun. For best coverage as a groundcover, avoid planting in very cold or wet areas. The top photo gives you a good image of this ground cover plant when it is in full bloom. The bottom right pictures is a good photo of the foliage when not in bloom. In most locations, the foliage will look good even in the winter months.

Turkey sees rise in seed production, export in 2011

(Today's Zaman) Turkey's seed production has risen fourfold, while seed export has increased by a factor of six in the past nine years.

According to an announcement by the Food, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Ministry, Turkey exported seed to 66 countries, in particular to Russia, Ukraine and Italy. Seed export generated $109 million in revenue for the country in 2011.

The ministry noted the role that regulations implemented during the course of the nine years to improve the conditions of the sector had played in this increase, and said that those regulations, passed with the support of the ministry, as well as its support for certified seed production have also contributed largely to the improvements.

Expressing its support of private and public research institutes, the ministry stated: “Seed production rose from 145,000 tons in 2002 to 635,000 tons in 2011 with the implementation of such regulations. At the same time, the size of the sector grew seven times and increased from $120 million to $960 million.”

The biggest increase in seed export was seen in vegetable seed, with a 5,062 percent rise. Production of barley seed ranked highest among grain crops exported, with an increase of 1,100 percent between 2002 and 2011. Rice seed followed, with a 562 percent increase, while production of wheat seed, sunflower seed, corn seed and cotton seed were also high on the list. Russia ranked at the top for buying the largest amount of seed from Turkey, with $16.4 million.

Ukraine came second, with $15.5 million, followed by Italy, with $14.9 million.

Maharashtra gets tough with seed companies selling duds

(The Economic Times) Companies that sell vegetable seeds to farmers have come under the scanner in Maharashtra following a rise in complaints about dud seeds. There has been an explosion in the number of vegetable seed varieties in the recent past following a surge in demand for vegetables.

According to Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, the current per capita daily requirement of vegetables is at 300 gram while availability is at 227 gram.

The Maharashtra agriculture department, which instituted a screening committee for permitting new varieties, has denied permission to about half of the varieties. Seed companies need licences from state governments to sell seeds in respective states.

"Sometimes, the yields of the varieties presented by seed companies are less than those of the varieties of agricultural universities. Sometimes, our breeders have questions about the trials and the results of the trials. We also found that companies present 3-4 different varieties with similar yields or characteristics, which we think may confuse the farmers," said Maharashtra agricultural commissioner Umakant Dangat.

Raju Kapur, executive director, National Seed Association of India, concurred: "A harmonisation of seed registration processes being followed across states, for approval of sale in the state, will hasten the availability of good seeds to farmers and help the industry provide newer seeds in time."

At least one variety of almost all the leading seed companies has been rejected till now in Maharashtra. Though the agriculture department did not name the five companies having the highest rejections, officials confirmed that seeds of Ganga Kaveri, Nuziveedu, Kaveri Seeds, Monsanto Holdings, Sriram Bio Seeds, Advanta, Mahyco, Rasi, Ankur and Krishidhan have been denied permission to sell.

A Mahyco spokesperson said in a reply to an emailed query: "We, Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company Limited, would like to state that we have complied with all the requirements from the state agricultural department and all our vegetable hybrid seeds have been approved by them during 2011."

There was no response from Krishidhan Seeds despite attempts to contact them. The company has presented 112 varieties for approval in about 24 months.

Farmer organisations have different views on the issue. "Seed companies charge exorbitant prices for seeds. Tomato seed from a leading seed company is sold for Rs 75,000/kg. When we pay so much, it is our right to get quality seed," said Shriram Gadhave, president, All India Vegetable Growers' Association.

Deficit rainfall, depleting ground water tables and prevalence of drought are impacting vegetable cultivation in both districts.

In East Godavari, horticulture crops are being raised over about 7,000 hectares, nearly 6,000 hectares with irrigation sources and borewells and only 1,000 hectares rain-fed.

Horticulture authorities under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana are offering seeds of several varieties of vegetables including tomato, okra, brinjal, all kinds of gourds and other varieties on subsidy.

In West Godavari, vegetables are being raised over about 4,000 hectares, only 500 hectares rain-fed. As per official estimates, nearly 189 vegetable farmers are likely to be benefited with the supply of hybrid variety of vegetable seeds on 50% subsidy. Horticulture authorities ruled out any possible impact of deficit rainfall and drought on perennial crops like oil palm and others.

The government held a review meet with horticulture authorities rece-ntly and asked them to ensure supply of vegetable seeds to farmers on subsidy to avoid any possible shortage of supply of vegetables in the state.

Farmers, especially from drought-affected mandals will get input subsidy worth Rs.4,500 per hectare. Recently, the government enhanced the target for cultivation of oil palm to two lakh hectares from the existing 1.10 lakh in the state.

This exercise is mean to avoid import of oil palm from other countries. At present oil palm is being cultivated over about 50,822 hectares in West Godavari.
