New Merville company makes composter that keeps the rodents out
Posted by Labels: Canada, Manure and CompostingCombatting rats in your compost? A local entrepreneur has a solution.
Building from the Speedibin, a sheet metal composter sold in the 1990's by her parents, Joyce McMenamon is working with compost experts to perfect the backyard composter.
"Compost adds permanent fertility to your garden, stops nutrient loss through leaching, and reduces waste to the landfill. We hope that the Speedibin will resolve one of the obstacles to backyard composting." says McMenamon.
The new Speedibin is all metal with a screen on the bottom to allow transfer of microbes, worms and water, is 380 litres (100 US gal, about 30 inches square, 29 high), and has an easy access lid and front door. Profits will be donated to food security societies.
Check out this new composter at Seedy Saturday, March 3 at the Filberg Centre.
You can see a 20 year-old Speedibin in action at the Comox Valley Compost Education Centre. New Speedibins are available at South Country Feed and Supply, The Green Room and Black Creek Farm and Feed. For more info see Speedibin.com.
