For the first time in its eight-year history, the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival will be a three-day event, organizers said Tuesday.

"It's our goal one day to provide a month-long program of events under the umbrella of the Chicken and Egg Festival," Kathy Graham said.

The festival, which regularly has drawn 15,000 for the weekend, will be April 13-15 at the Lions Club Fairgrounds in Moulton. The event features live music, a variety of food and a VIP Bike Night for motorcycle enthusiasts. Gates open at 5 p.m. each day.

There is a $3 admission charge.

Also new this year is a live chicken display — the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival Poultry Show.

Sanctioned by the American Poultry Association and the American Bantam Association, the show is open to all bantam and large fowl. Entrants will be judged on various physical points.

"It's kind of the Westminster Dog Show for chickens," event coordinator Vicki Morese said.

More than 500 chickens are expected in a competition that will pay $4,000 in prize money, she said. Poultry experts from Tennessee, Florida, Ohio and Michigan will judge daily shows in A.W. Todd Coliseum at the Lions Club Fairgrounds.

Live music begins at 8:30 p.m. Performers include the Kentucky Head Hunters, Voodoo Bayou, Barren River Trio, the Ray Johnston Band, Lipbone Redding, Cedric Burnside, Spatial Effects, Delta Reign, Breaking Grass and Black Oak Arkansas.

Each year, children and adults participate in festival contests, including the hard-boiled egg and chicken wing eating battles. During the 2011 festival, the champion of the hard-boiled egg eating contest ate 25 eggs.

The winner of the chicken wing eating contest consumed 40 wings in five minutes.

The festival continues to grow, despite a struggling economy, Morese said.

"Where else can you hear over 13 bands, learn more about chickens than you need to know, and participate in family-oriented activities with only a $3 admission tag?" she said.
