CULLING
Posted byREMOVAL OF ABNORMAL AND STUNTED SEEDLINGS
Objectives of Culling
1. To remove all seedlings with abnormal appearance which may reduce future yield.
2. To make sure all planted seedlings are productive palms.
Why Culling?
1. Oil palm is cross-pollinated plant and thus has a very heterozygous genetic constitution.
2. D x P seeds - hybrid seeds subject to genetic segregation.
3. Heterogeneus population - no two individual palms are completely alike in Phenotype & Genotype.
4. Abnormal seedlings are those with inferior genetic constitution due to segregation.
5. They produce uneconomical yield.
6. Yield 0% or up to 59% lower than normal seedlings.
7. Long term (>25 years) economic loss if planted.
CHOP OFF RUNTS & ROGUES IMMEDIATELY DURING CULLING. IF IN DOUBT, PULL IT OUT. NEVER COMPROMISE ON CULLING!!!
