During the 2004 Legislative session the Senate adopted a bill related to health, fitness and nutrition in schools.
This requires the district’s board of directors to establish a policy by August 1, 2005, to provide students access
to nutritious food, opportunities for physical activity and accurate information related to these topics.
Nutrition and Physical Fitness Policy
Research indicates that obese children are at a higher risk for developing long-term health problems. Research also indicates that obesity and subsequent diseases are largely preventable through diet and regular physical activity. Children who eat well-balanced meals and are healthy are more likely to learn in the classroom. The Board supports good nutrition as well as physical activity at all grade levels to enhance the well-being of our district’s youth. Therefore, it is the policy of the Board to:
a. Provide students access to nutritious food;
b. Provide opportunities for physical activity and developmentally appropriate exercise; and
c. Provide accurate information related to these topics.
The Superintendent shall develop and implement a district-wide nutrition program consistent with state and federal requirements for school districts participating in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. The Superintendent shall also develop and implement a curriculum on health, fitness and nutrition consistent with the Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs), with developmentally appropriate instruction for grades K-12.
