Demand soars for Allahabad's watermelons

ALLAHABAD: famous guavas of the district, the local variety of watermelons, too, are high on demand and are even exported to Nepal and Bhutan where consignments worth several lakhs are sent. One of the famous varieties is Madhuri 64, a hybrid of watermelon cultivated in Andhra Pradesh.

The belt along the Ganga from Phaphamau onwards is the hub of watermelon farming at places like Dafri, Kulesarghat and Puramufti in Kaushambi. The scorching summer sun is a boon for watermelon as its sweetness is directly proportional to exposure to sunlight, said Tariq Saeed, a farmer.

The sowing season of watermelon grown on the banks of Ganga begins in December last week and the crop gets ready by mid-April after which the farmers send them to local markets laden atop camels and trucks, said a local wholeseller Mohd Muslim.

About supply of watermelons to Nepal and Bhutan, Mahfooz, a trader, said: "Generally, a consignment marked for border districts like Gorakhpur is sent to these countries by local traders who naturally rake moolahs."

He added that since the demand has increased this year, sellers have advanced the date of sending the produce which otherwise is sent during June and afterwards. However we are praying that this time weather should not play spoilsport like last year when unexpected showers and hailstorm caused major damage to the crop, he said.

A wholeseller at Mundera Mandi, Niaz said: "On an average, five to six truckloads of watermelon are sent to Gorakhpur from where they are sent to foreign markets. Usually, a truck load of watermelon weighs around 11 metric tonnes and is priced at Rs 32,000.

In the retail market, a single watermelon is sold for Rs 3.25 per kg, but in the case of export quality product, price increases if the total weight exceeds 11 metric tonnes.

Apart from this, the local variety is also sent to neighbouring districts of Rewa, Satna, Katni and Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh and the rates are same, he added.

Norms relaxed for free power to farm sector

It is not just agriculture but also allied activities – horticulture and fish/prawn culture – that will be eligible for free power supply.

Apart from the cultivation of food crops, vegetables, seeds, trees and other plants, the tariff revision order, issued by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) on Friday last, states that sericulture, floriculture, horticulture, mushroom cultivation, cattle farming, poultry/other bird farming and fish/prawn culture carried out as allied activities of agriculture will be construed as agricultural activities.

Unlike the previous tariff order issued in July 2010, the latest order mentions specifically that agriculture and allied activities have been brought under the tariff meant for the farm sector.

There is no rate payable by consumer, as the entire energy charges of Rs. 1,750 per horse power per annum will be absorbed by the State government.

This means that the government will provide Rs. 1,950 crore during 2012-2013 to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation towards the implementation of free power supply scheme for farm connections.

Out of 41,541 million units to be sold to low-tension consumers during the year, the category of agriculture accounts for 10,601 MU, representing 25.5 per cent.

Though agriculturists are, under the agriculture tariff system, permitted to use water pumped from wells and stored in overhead tanks for bona fide domestic purposes in farm houses, the latest order is silent on the distance of the location of the farm houses from the wells, except stating in general that the farm houses should be in close proximity from the wells.

However, the Commission's previous order had prescribed that the distance should not exceed 50 metres.

Explaining how the figure of energy to be sold to agriculturists during the year had been arrived at, the TNERC's new order, quoting the TANGEDCO's correspondence, states that the agricultural consumption is calculated every month based on the sample meter reading furnished by field officials.

World Record in Potato Production for Bihar Farmer

An upbeat Chief Minister on Wednesday proudly displayed the potatoes raised by a farmer in his home district of Nalanda who has earned the honor of setting a new world record in potato production using only organic farming techniques.

The farmer, who happens to share the name of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has managed to raise 72.9 tons of potatoes per hectare beating the previous world record of 45 tons per hectare established earlier by the Netherlands.

"This is a very proud moment for all of us that further bolsters our resolve of a second green revolution in the state. Nitish has proved that with proper knowledge and technique, Bihar could attain this goal in not so distant future," the Chief Minister said.

Sanjay Kumar Agrawal, the Nalanda District Magistrate, said experts and senior officials have verified the legitimacy of the new record and the farmer would soon be honored at a function held in the coming days.
