NY cotton closes down for 3rd time, may slip further

Posted by Flora Sawita Labels:

Cotton futures ended lower Friday for the third session in a row in the face of a stronger dollar and investor selling, and analysts said the weak tone should persist into next week.

Benchmark May cotton on ICE Futures US fell 1.44 cents or over 1.5 percent to conclude at 88.23 cents per lb, trading from 87.80 to 90.50 cents. For the week, cotton shed 2.13 percent.

Volume traded Friday was around 18,100 lots, preliminary Thomson Reuters data showed, down slightly from Thursday's tally of 18,504 lots.

Sharon Johnson, senior cotton analyst at commodities brokerage Penson Futures in Atlanta, Georgia, said the December low around 84.25/35 cents would be a "valid target" for the market.

"The dollar is very strong today and that is not helping the cause a bit," she said.

Traders said the failure of key May to establish itself above the 93 and 94 cents area of resistance prompted investors to liquidate positions in the market.

Johnson and other dealers said some limited scale-down mill buying has emerged at the market's lows and served to trim its losses.

But players said the tendency of mills at this point would be to wait for prices to bottom out before stepping back into the market.

Cotton will also take its cue from the way outside markets perform in the weeks ahead and this lineup of financial markets would include global stocks, gold, crude and the grains complex.

Analysts said cotton players will also turn their focus to the next USDA monthly supply/demand report due out March 9.

At the end of March, the USDA will then release its keenly awaited potential plantings report.

Open interest in cotton, an indicator of investor exposure, rose for a fifth session running to 173,611 lots as of March 1, from the previous session's 172,767 lots, ICE Futures US data showed.

NY cotton ends higher on investor buying

Cotton futures extended its gains to end at a 5-day high Monday as follow-through investor buying gave fiber contracts a lift, analysts said.

The key March cotton futures on ICE Futures US gained 0.77 cent to settle at 99.37 cents per lb, dealing from 98.06 to 99.44 cents. The contract built on an uptrend that began at the 17-month low hit on Dec. 14.

"It's holding in here like a rock. The market continues to chew its way up to the near-term of $1.02," said Mike Stevens, an independent cotton analyst in Mandeville, Louisiana.

Cotton's strength was bolstered by news coming from China, the world's leading consumer of cotton for its textile and apparel industry.

Stevens said in a report that "the rate of China's GDP, robust retail sales and factory output plus expectations that China's planted acreage will fall next season all contributed to bullish attitudes."

Volume traded on Monday reached almost 17,300 lots, over 15 percent above the 30-day norm, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Analysts said business may slow down this week as the Chinese celebrate their New Year.

Other technical resistance targets for the March cotton contract loom at 99.95 cents a lb, and then though the key $1 psychological level and then $1.02.

A close in the March contract below Tuesday's low of 95.67 cents would likely lead to further losses leading down to 94, then 91 cents, analysts said.

Cotton's open interest - an indicator of investor exposure - stood at 158,439 lots as of Jan. 20 versus 157,614 lots on Jan. 19, the exchange said.

KARACHI: Trading remained brisk with buying in lint of all grades amid firm spot rate, traders at the Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) said on Monday.

KCA kept the spot rate unchanged at Rs 5,400 per maund, floor brokers said.

Floor brokers said the buyers in Punjab and Sindh stations bought lint of all grades on competitive prices while spinners in Punjab stations bought fine stocks at around Rs 5,575 per maund during the trading session.

They said mills in Sindh and Punjab stations purchased fine lint for blending purposes while private sector commercial exporters also made deals in fine lint.

The prices of second grade lint remained on the higher side as it was traded at around Rs 4,950 per maund in Punjab and Sindh stations, brokers said.

Around 90 percent of the total market volume of 24,000 bales changed hands in Punjab stations during trading session, said floor brokers.

“The New York Futures market remained flat during past 20 days with some point variation, however it cast a positive impact on local market price,” said fibre analyst Shakeel Ahmad. “Due to bumper crop in the country of around 15.2 million bales, besides dearth of fine grade in Sindh, the sellers were bound to obey buyers’ offers while buyers were making deals for all grades for blending purposes.”

Ahmad said lint prices in Sindh remained under Rs 3,950 per maund to Rs 5,300 per maund and in Punjab they were at around Rs 4,850 per maund to Rs 5,550 per maund depending on grade.

The New York Futures market remained stable as March Futures 2012 stood at 91.80 cents per pounds and May Futures 2012 at 91.68 cents per pound. Cotlook A index stood at 96.65 cents per pound.
