Europe worried over spread of Bt cotton in India

India has made rapid strides in cotton production ever since adopting the genetically modified technology 10 years ago. It has also helped the country emerge as a key supplier of the natural fibre to the global market, especially China.

However, the large-scale adoption of genetically modified technology is causing concern to other nations, especially in Europe. This, in turn, could begin to hurt exports of other agricultural products exports, especially ones that are organic and non-genetically modified.

According to available statistics, India exported about 300 organic products fetching Rs 1,960 crore in 2011. In contrast, it shipped out 66 lakh bales (170 kg each) of cotton earning over Rs 15,500 crore. This year, it is projected to export 80 lakh bales and it could end up earning foreign exchange of about Rs 14,000 crore.

Of the nearly 12 million hectares brought under cotton this year, nearly 95 per cent grew Bt cotton.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda) has fixed a target of touching Rs 5,000 crore in organic products exports by 2015.

“We in Europe, particularly Germany, are worried over the spread of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in India. Your Government has to deal with that immediately,” said Mr Ulrich Walter of Ulrich Walter GmbH, Germany. Mr Walter's company is one of the largest importers of organic Darjeeling tea. It is also importing coffee and spices from Kerala, mainly Peeramedu, and holy basil (tulsi) from Uttar Pradesh.

He made these remarks at a session on tea at BioFach 2012 that was held here last week.

‘CANNOT COEXIST'

“Europeans want to consume products with a clear conscience. Therefore, there is increasing awareness on organic and fair-price products,” said Mr Walter.

He told Business Line later that genetically modified and conventionally produced crops cannot coexist. “They may be kept at a distance but still there could be pollution of conventional and organic crop through wind and pollen,” he said, adding that people in Germany were particularly concerned over the strides made by India in Bt cotton.

According to Apeda, 4.84 million hectares are under organic farming in India and 75 per cent of this is grown in the wild. Again, only 16 per cent of organic products produced in the country is exported.

Among products treated as non-GMOs, soyameal accounts for a major share in exports. Indian organic products are primarily exported by Europe, the US, Canada and Japan. In Europe, Germany and Switzerland are the main buyers.

Mr Gerald A. Herrmann of Organic Services Germany GmbH said that organic products' exports from India were increasing by 33 per cent every year and most products were being marketed as being free from pesticides.

“However, at the recent World Spice Congress at Pune in India one of the speakers pointed out that India topped in cases of pesticide residues being higher than permitted limits,” he said.

Mr Herman Lanting, an agronomist, said that it was increasingly becoming difficult to find non-Bt cotton in India. “India has begun to lose some great traditional varieties such as DCH-32,” he said.

According to Ms Simone Seisl of Remei AG, Switzerland, her firm that sources organic cotton for retailing is finding it difficult as farmers were switching over to Bt varieties. “Though some want to get back, it is a big task to get them going again, particularly due to the switch over,” she said.

However, Mr Mukesh Gupta of Morarka Organics Foods said that Bt cotton is not posing danger since it was grown in irrigated areas. “Organic products are mainly grown in rain-fed areas and there need not be any fear of GMOs getting mixed,” he told an interactive session at BioFach.

“Every buyer, particularly in Europe, wants a face to any product that he or she buys. They are just not satisfied with buying organic products. What more is their question. In these circumstances, GMOs and mere non-GMO products could put Indian exports under pressure,” said a global consultant who did not wish to be identified.

Plantings of biotech crops grow globally in 2011 – report

The United States remained the primary backer of biotech crop technology in 2011, but adoption spread internationally as the total global planted area of genetically modified seeds grew 8 per cent from a year ago, according to a report issued Tuesday.

Roughly 160 million hectares, or 395.2 million acres, were planted with biotech crops in 2011, up 8 per cent from 2010, said the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA) in its annual report on biotech seed use.

The biotech crops were planted by 16.7 million farmers in 29 countries, up from 15.4 million farmers in the same number of countries in 2010. (A full copy of the report can be found here: www.isaaa.org.)

“I was a little surprised that the growth was as strong as it is,” said Clive James, chairman of the ISAAA board of directors. “Millions of farmers around the world in both industrial and developing countries are adopting the technology.”

ISAAA is a not-for-profit organization aimed at promoting crop biotechnology applications, which are the subject of controversy, particularly in Europe, where they are largely banned. Critics say there is evidence of human health dangers and environmental problems connected to genetically modified crops, though the technology companies who develop them and supporters say they are proven safe.

US farmers have embraced the technology, and most of the US corn and soybeans are genetically altered. Corporate biotech leaders, like Monsanto, have crafted crops that tolerate dousings of herbicides, and crops that are designed to resist pests, effectively creating their own insecticide.

The technology is becoming increasingly popular in Brazil and Argentina, China, India and South Africa, said James.

But the United States has by far the largest area of planted genetically altered crops. According to the ISAAA, US farmers planted 69 million hectares, or 170.43 million acres, with biotech crops in 2011; followed by Brazil with 30.3 million hectares, (75 million acres) and Argentina with 23.7 million hectares (59 million acres).

US plantings were up 3 per cent from 2010.

While the United States boasts biotech corn, soybeans, cotton, canola, sugarbeet, alfalfa, papaya and squash, in Latin America biotech crops are so far limited to soybeans, corn and cotton.

India had 10.6 million hectares (26.2 million acres) planted to cotton in 2011 and Canada had 10.4 million hectares (25.7 million acres) planted to canola, corn, soybeans and sugarbeet.

All other countries had less than half that amount, with China having the next largest planting area for biotech crops with 3.9 million hectares (9.6 million acres) planted in 2011.

While biotech crops remain highly controversial in Europe, six European Union countries — Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Romania — planted 114,490 hectares of biotech corn in 2011, up from 23,297 hectares in 2010.

Biotech crops are accepted for import for food and feed use and for release into the environment in 60 countries, including major food importing countries like Japan, which do not plant biotech crops, the ISAAA said.

The global value of biotech seed alone was $13.2 billion in 2011, with the end product of commercial grain from biotech maize, soybean grain and cotton valued at $160 billion or more per year, according to the ISAAA.

(The Denver Chanel) There will be no payout for horse breeders who stored frozen genetic material at the Equine Reproduction Lab at Colorado State University.

A devastating fire tore through the ERL back in July. Then, in late December, CSU's insurance company decided it would not cover the precious frozen semen, eggs and embryos that were destroyed.

That news came as a shock in the gut to breeders like Charlie Cox who said the University's legal department has been dismissive about the situation from the beginning.

"It could have been handled much better. There was never one word about my potential loss or other people's losses of genetic material," said Charlie Cox who breeds Gypsy Cob horses. "This whole attitude of -- sue us. I'm not sure they ever intended to do the right thing."

Breeders like Cox must now file a claim with the state attorney general's office by Jan. 21 to reserve the right to sue CSU.

"If it is not received by that date, you may be forever barred under law from seeking restitution," said Cox who plans to file in the coming days.

CSU said its insurance carrier made the decision not to cover claims made by those with genetic material stored at the lab.

Cox lost anywhere from $15,000 to $25,000 in the fire.

The cause is still undetermined. No people or horses were injured.

(Reuters) - Global agribusiness Monsanto Co's corn that is engineered to kill insects may be losing its effectiveness against rootworms in four states as the worms are developing resistance to the insecticide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said.

Based on reports from entomologists and documented cases of crop damage, rootworms in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Nebraska are suspected of developing tolerance to the insecticide, the EPA report said.

“Over 50 percent of children below five years in India are underweight. And, escalating food prices have ensured that the poor constantly reduce their intake. Yet, we lag way behind in adopting technology, while countries with surplus and relatively inexpensive food continue to embrace it,” said B. Sesikeran, Director, National Institute of Nutrition (NIN).

He was delivering the award-winning Srinkatia Memorial Lecture on ‘Technology for better nutrition' – at the 43rd National Conference of the National Society of India on ‘Economic Transition in Nutrition' – at the NIN campus, here on Saturday.

“Innovation in food technology is mandatory to ensure food security in our country. It is now time to move from green revolution to a gene revolution,” he said.

Pointing out that 29 countries and 15.4 billion farmers have benefited through transgenic technology, he said that India is on the wrong track, ignoring advantages of transgenic crops. With persistent decrease in cultivable land, he said that only improved farm practices, breeding and biotechnology can enable a 250 per cent growth in food production, while avoiding them will contribute to a mere 50 per cent growth.

Even as the economy is on the rise and cost of living is increasing, unhealthy foods are becoming cheaper and there is significant fall in the intake of cereals and pulses, he informed. Genetic modification can ensure that proteins, vitamins and minerals are enhanced in foods that the poor can afford. “Bio fortification of energy rich staple foods uses systemic plant breeding or genetic techniques to develop micronutrient rich staple food. It has the advantage of being low cost and has regional appropriateness,” he said.

While acknowledging the risks that Genetically Modified (GM) crops may pose, he said that the ratio of benefits from the crops outweigh their risks a great deal. “We are consuming mutated crops for decades. The panic about them, however, is new found. That millions in other countries are eating GM crops, after risk assessment, and are healthy is testimony that the crops are safe,” added. The need of the hour is to produce more food from less land, less water and less labour; and in a sustainable manner.

Monsanto buys bee-friendly pesticide researcher

Monsanto Co. said Wednesday it bought a smaller biotech research company that is developing a technology to kill crop pests while protecting the health of bees.

Monsanto, the world's biggest seed company, did not disclose terms of the deal to buy the company, called Beeologics.

Bees are critical plant pollinators, and public concern has swelled over a recent bee pathology called colony collapse disorder. The disorder causes whole hives of bees to die off, cutting the numbers of insects that naturally pollinate important food crops.

It's still unclear what causes colony collapse disorder, but pesticides have been linked to bee deaths.

Monsanto develops genetically engineered strains of corn and soybeans that grow their own pesticides. The company said it will use Beeologics's technology to develop new crops, but it didn't elaborate.

"Both companies expect that their combined research could provide farmers with novel approaches to the challenges they face," Monsanto said in a statement.

Shares of Monsanto fell $2.07, or 3 percent, to $63.94.
