Onion prices ruled flat this week as heavy arrivals continue to flood markets near growing regions in Maharashtra and Gujarat.
“Onion prices, despite a marginal rise, were around same levels seen in the last couple of weeks. Nearly 38,000 tonnes arrived in the last four days in Maharashtra markets,” said Mr Rupesh Jaju, Director of Nashik-based United Pacific Agro Pvt. Ltd that exports onion.
“Arrivals will continue to be high in the short term,” said Mr Madan Prakash, Director of Chennai-based Rajathi Group of Companies that exports agricultural produce.
At least 60 per cent of the arrivals were in Nashik district markets, while markets in Pune district accounted for another 11.5 per cent of the arrivals. Arrivals in Ahmednagar districts were low as many markets there were closed for a major part of this week.
On the higher side, most trades were done at Rs 491 a quintal and on the lower side, they were done at Rs 237. The average trading price was Rs 390 a quintal.
On Friday, the modal price or the rate at which most trades took place was Rs 325 a quintal at Pune Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee yard, up Rs 15 over last week.
“Demand is normal in the domestic market,” said Mr Prakash.
Export demand is constant with buying taking place from West Asia and Malaysia, said Mr Jaju.
“We should see better export demand from next month onwards,” said Mr Prakash.
The rabi onion crop is set to hit the market but prices are unlikely to gain for another month.
Meanwhile, Italy has begun buying white onions from Gujarat and some parts of Maharashtra.
