Palm oil is becoming a commercial crop in Western province, overtaking sugarcane and rice farming respectively.
Impeccable sources can reveal that in 2008, the ministry of Agriculture imported100,000 seedlings of Palm oil from Costa Rica, of which 80,000 seedlings were planted in Busia County and other parts of Western province.
The crop according to the Western provincial Director of Agriculture Mr. John Cheruiyot, has survival chances of up to 70% in the region.
Recent statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture shows that Kenya sends close to Kshs.16billion annually to import edible oil of which more than 80% is palm oil. This is an indication that there is market for the product locally.
"Farmers stand to benefit most by venturing into palm oil farming business in Western province" says Emmanuel Kisuya, Research officer at KARI in Alupe Busia County.
