J&K govt sets 6 lakh kg mushroom production target for Jammu
Posted by Labels: India, Kashmir, Production Target(PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir government has set a target for 6 lakh kilograms of mushroom production in Jammu division during the current year. "We hope the Agriculture Department would achieve the target of 6,000 quintals (6 lakh kg) of mushroom this year," Agriculture Director Ajay Khajuria said here. Khajuria said the total number of mushroom growers in the division has reached 752 and annual production of the vegetable currently stands at 5,616 quintals (5,61,600 kg).
Regarding apiculture, he said the total number of existing bee colonies in the division is about 35,000 and its potential is 1.26 lakh kg of honey. He said honey worth Rs 4.3 crore was produced last year in Jammu province. Underlining the need for harnessing the huge potential of mushroom cultivation and apiculture development in Jammu division, Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir called for comprehensive planning to strengthen the contribution of these activities to the economy of the state.
The minister said these activities have enormous employment potential in rural belts and one of the thrust areas of the government should be to motivate people to engage in them as a profitable venture. Expressing dissatisfaction over the performance of field functionaries, he asked the ministry to involve educated youth in such activities by providing them technological guidance, incentives and moral support. There should be a target for at least one mushroom cultivation and apiculture development unit in every village covered by these field functionaries, he added.
