India: Over 300 dogs participate in canine show

Organized by Amritsar Kennel Club, the show saw several Indian and imported breeds from various districts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Bangalore, Jaipur, Jabalpur and many other places.
The breeds had been classified into groups like toy, terrier, utility, hound, gun dog, working and pastoral group. The breeds included Bulldog, Bull Terrier, German Shepherd, Doberman, Boxer, Great Dane, Miniature Pinscher, Pug and Bull Mastiff.
The dogs were judged by Gibrayal Gamara from Uruguay and Jowan Alberto Gesalo from Columbia. The kennel club had set up two rings for canine exhibition and the audience included both pet owners and animal lovers.
"The dog show here has come a long way in the last decade, with quality of entries getting improved. Those who are really passionate about having a well-bred pooch in the backyard are shelling out lakhs to buy imported breeds," said Ram Narayan Chakrabarti, a visitor.
Giving a thumbs-up to the show, Jalandhar resident Himashu Salaria said he took his two pugs to the show so that they would be able to interact with dogs of other breeds. "My family loved the show and my pugs seemed a little dazed to be among so many others of their kind,'' he said.
Dharmender Singh, a resident of Mohali, whose American breed Pitbull "Tosan" that drew a lot of attention, said, "Everyone was admiring my pet. I bought it last year from the same dog show,'' he said.
Sumant Tuteja, vice-president of the kennel club, said the choice of dogs has definitely changed in recent years. "Dog lovers in Amritsar are now willing to spend a bit more to buy a dog which suits their personal requirements. A costly dog has always been a status symbol in the city," he said.
He further said that dog breeding has also picked up in a big way in the city in the last couple of years and a whole new market of quality pups has come up here.
"Amritsar is not behind any other big city when it comes to dog breeding and dog lovers don't need to get puppies from outside," he said.
Rajan Gussian, a city resident, said he bought an imported St Bernard for Rs 2 lakh, which had been imported from America.
"There is always an element of suspicion about the genuineness of puppies purchased locally. To make sure that there is no adulteration in the breed, it is always better to get a dog which has been imported," he said.
