50 Deer in National Monument Lack of Food and Water

Condition of 50 spotted deer in National Monument (Monas), Central Jakarta now is very bad. For the last four months, water pump at deer cage is not functioned do the pond is dry. As a result, those deer at the cheapest tourism attraction in Jakarta are thirsty.

Dasuki as Jakarta officer of Park and Cemetery Department who standby at Southern area of National Monument admitted has reported this problem to related department, but no respond at all. “I have report it privately,” he expressed who on duty at South area of Monas since 1993, Friday (11/11).

Even, he confused how the deer can live without water. Therefore, sometimes he asked the visitors to give water to those dotted deer.

Besides lack of water, several deer are also injured. Even, for the last three months three deer have died. “They have given many births, some of them are dead and also brought to Ragunan,” he added.

He asserted that for past few years, the preservation has been moved from Ragunan Zoo (TMR) to Central Jakarta Agriculture and Livestock Sub-Department. While handling by Ragunan Zoo, the deer preservation is quite effective. Officers are always come to check the animals health condition and varied grass are brought  such as carrot, water spinach, sweet potatoes, peanuts, bananas, and also salt for the animals’ body immune.

But recently, the deer are only given two bags of grass every day. Even, on Saturday and Sunday, the officer did not brought grass. He hoped that Jakarta Provincial Government pays attention to dotted deer life. “They are also God’s creation, if the officer cannot maintain them, let them free and look for food by themselves. But, this time, department only gives two sacks contained 50 kilograms per day but not gradually,” he continued.

Ipih Ruyani as Head of Jakarta Maritime and Agriculture Department explained that his departments have investigated deer condition. “Those deer are not lack of food. Because total of deer are increasing, from 40 to 50 deer, it means they breed and had enough food,” he asserted.

However, he admitted deer condition in southern area of Monas is overpopulated. Whereas, his department will also check the broken water pump to field. It is similar to the deer condition. Nowadays, daily operational management of deer in Monas Park is applied by Central Jakarta Maritime and Fishery Sub-Department. “But, we will examine its condition,” he continued.
