MORE ON ORANGUTANS...
Posted by50 Orangutans die each week due to the Palm Oil industry. Sumatra and Borneo have two distinct species of orangutans – of which fewer than 60,000 remain on either of the two islands (as of 2007). As these are some of the last places for wild orangutans, there are estimates they will be extinct in ten years. Worried?
IT DOESN’T NEED TO BE THIS WAY! BUT WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Pressure from videos like this:
helped to persuade a big name company like Nestle to switch to sustainable palm oil practices. Short of making a viral video of your own, what else can you do?
1 - Shop smart! Choose companies that use sustainable palm oil and ask them to label their products accordingly. *Please see below for a shopping guide of brand name companies that are part of the RSPO.
2 - Write to your favorite restaurant or grocery store manager, asking them to supply sustainably grown Palm Oil products.
3 - Write to US legislators asking them to support USAID grants that protect rainforests, orangutans and indigenous peoples in Indonesia and Malaysia.
4 - Contact the manufacturer of products that do not carry the GreenPalm or UTZ Certification logos - ask them to use substitute oils or to switch to sustainable palm oil products.
5 - Avoid purchasing or using wood products made from the following rainforest trees: Teak, Ebony, Ironwood, Sandalwood, Mahogany, and Ramin, unless you know it was sustainably grown.
6 - Spread awareness of the issues caused by non-sustainably grown palm oil.
7 - Set a good example and tell your friends, family members and coworkers about the issue -- let them know how they too can help to make a difference.
