It is a known fact that the Kentia Palm was a favorite of Queen Victoria. Many pictures taken of Queen Victoria at her stately homes or castles regularly featured a beautiful Kentia Palm somewhere in the background. Tradition has it that Queen Victoria left instructions that Kentia Palms be featured as a decorative plant at her lying in state prior to her funeral. Thus the nickname of 'sentry palm" for the Kentia Palm became known, because the trees were positioned at the four corners of her coffin.
