KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 (Bernama) -- The government has given the green light for the extension of permit for foreign workers who have worked for five years in the oil palm plantation sector, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.
He said the extension, for five more years, was to address the shortage of workers in the sector. "The government is concerned over the shortage of workers in the plantation sector, especially in the oil palm sub-sector. The government is aware that if drastic measures are not taken to address the problem, it will affect the productivity and competitiveness of this sub-sector," he said in a statement.
He said plantation was among the sectors which relied heavily on foreign workers due to the lack of interest among the locals workers.
