Kenya's Soil Erosion leads to Famine

Posted by Flora Sawita

In Kenya agriculture is literally the life blood of the country. The country was initially self sufficient and able to supply enough food for its people. Unfortunately this changed. One of the main reasons for the change was the use of unsustainable agricultural practices that exposed soil to erosion and deforestation. These practices combined with the fact that Kenya has many hilly regions which are highly prone to erosion by gravity led to a decrease in food production. As the situation continued to worsen, Kenya's fertile top soil was extensively carried away leaving behind soil that lacked the needed nutrients for agricultural food production. This led to famine.
Due to lack of produce in the year 2007 and later rains were not sufficient in the year 2008 a great famine ensued. Kenya was forced to use all its food reserves and now must rely on emergency relief food from international organizations.
