THE Malaysian government has teamed up with Internet search engine giant Google and two local universities to offer a stimulus package for local small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to help boost their presence in the cyberworld.
Dubbed the "SME Business Stimulus Package", it will help local SMEs, especially new entrants to the online world, set up a web presence and do business via the Internet.
There are now over 550,000 SMEs in the country, but most of them do not have an e-commerce platform or an online website that allows to do business transactions like order, purchasing and payments.
The tie-up between the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Google, Multimedia University and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman is expected to help boost the online presence of local SMEs.
"We are continuing to see double-digit growth in user base and advertiser base moving forward," Google Southeast Asia head of online, Charif El-Ansari said.
Local SMEs that have products to sell can apply for the package, which will allow them to have their own website designed by one of the two local universities. They are also entitled to RM200 worth of free credit from Google, which can be used to start an online marketing campaign with Google AdWords, a search engine marketing platform.
"This SME Business Stimulus Package is very much in line with our mission to promote international trade and develop industrial activities to enhance Malaysia's economic growth," said Miti secretary-general Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Mamat.
