(People's Daily Online) China’s grain output hit a new high of over 571.2 million tons in 2011, an increase of 24.8 million ton from last year, the largest increase since the founding of the nation.
2011 marks the fifth straight year that the country’s grain output exceeded 550 million ton, and the eighth consecutive year of grain output growth in half a century.
The central government’s expenditure on agriculture, rural areas, and farmers increased to around 1 trillion yuan in 2011 from 262.6 billion yuan in 2004.
The abolition of the agricultural tax has relieved Chinese farmers of a burden of more than 130 billion yuan. China’s agricultural subsidies, including direct subsidies to farmers, rose to 140.6 billion yuan in 2011 from merely 14.5 billion yuan in 2004.
